What's that little button on my camera with the lightning bolt do? Well, I know it doesn't turn the camera into a taser to use on people who walk in front of my subject and stop to enjoy my view, I already tried that. Oh yeah, I remember! It turns on the photo destroyer mode, the washout/uglify/satanic eyes effect button. Use only in emergencies!
If you ever find yourself trying to photograph a mantis sitting on top of a tall weed that's blowing around in the wind and it's back lit to boot, you can consider it an emergency situation and call on the lightning.
With a dark object moving in and out of frame like that with the bright sky behind it there was no way my camera was going to focus or get decent metering. It has a Nikon logo on it, but apparently that doesn't mean it works miracles. So after trying everything I could think of I gave up and decided to at least get a clear picture for the sake of memory. Lightning mode engaged, adjust compensation, and shoot. Shoot it again. And again. One more time and...
Huh, I'll be danged, that looks alright!

Hahaha....nice dude! There's an art to using a flash...I just haven't figured out what it is yet, so it remains my nemesis. And I'm okay with that.
great picture!
That picture is awesome!
Jon its cause you need a diffuser for your pop up or you need a separate flash ;) I'm telling you it make the world a better place if you need to use a flash...
I've never used a diffuser...might have to try that. Doesn't the flash compensation 'sort of' do that too? I've dialed that down before and it's made the flash less stark.
